The South Carolina Justice Gap.

South Carolina residents face a significant civil "justice gap"—a lack of access to legal assistance in areas of basic human need, such as housing, family, and financial matters. To help illustrate this gap—and start conversations among providers, stakeholders, and decision-makers about how to narrow it—the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission is delighted to share its inaugural Justice Gap Report.

The report—“Measuring South Carolina’s Justice Gap”—draws on census data, provider data from South Carolina Legal Services and the South Carolina Bar, and court data from South Carolina Circuit and Magistrate courts and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina, to present basic facts about attorney access, lack of access, and representation in court, both geographically and by problem area.

Based on our efforts in compiling the report, the Legal Services Corporation selected this project to pilot the creation of an interactive data tool to accompany the Justice Gap Report that can be updated every year. The data tool allows users to view data for specific counties and case types in an interactive format.
